GOSPEL VS SECULAR MUSIC
There are times in the lives of music artists when they feel a need to
convert from recording and performing secular music and turn to
recording and performing gospel music. Oftentimes this is a result of
music artists converting to Christianity. Does it mean that if an
artist performs secular music then they are not Christians? There is a
whole spectrum of views on this matter.
'I don't understand why people tag secular musicians to be sinners and
gospel musicians as Christians. The only difference between the two is
that the former's lyrics is without the God word (no- religious) and
the latter has the God word in the song. Gospel means truth and a
secular musicians singing drugs are bad for you is singing the truth,
just as a gospel singer saying God is good is also singing the truth.
Now, is the secular musician whose lyric does not mention God a
sinner? Does all secular music contain profane words? There are many
secular songs that have catchy melodies, thoughtful insights and
positive message. There are many secular songs with no mention of God
that still uphold good values such as honesty, purity, and integrity.
Singing a gospel song does not automatically make one a Christian
neither does singing secular make one a sinner.
A song has its purpose. There are secular musicians which use their
songs to preach about H.I.V., teenage pregnancy and a whole lot of
social vice. There are also some gospel singers that love everything
ungodly and absolutely are the most un-Jesus like people you could
ever meet. Likewise, some who don't even sing about Jesus or never
mention Jesus once in their lyrics, are humble Bible believing family
man/women who are faithful believers in Christ. When a gospel singer
is embroiled in a scandal he/she is a disgrace to Christianity, and
the comment that follows it is: behaviour of secular musicians isn't
as bad as that!
Are secular musicians devils, sinners and idolaters? If a secular
musician (the sinner) sings gospel, God has touched/called him/her?
So, while a person is singing a song without the God word he/she has
not been touched? A really sad thought of life I believe.
The Bible nowhere condemns any particular style of music. Can the
lyrics in a secular song be true, noble, right, pure, lovely,
admirable, excellent and praiseworthy? If so, then there is nothing
wrong with a Christian listening to a secular song of that nature.
There is nothing inherently wrong with any particular style of music.
It is the lyrics that determines whether a song is "acceptable" for a
Christian to listen to.
We should stop being Pharisees (self-righteous people). I am not
advising anyone to watch ungodly videos music with nude pictures and
violence.
OPINIONS
•If a music is said to be secular, it simply means it has no
connection with religion therefore, songs that comes with decency and
good ethiques are not secular. Gospel music is not just mentioning the
name God but preaching about morality in songs makes it gospel since
it still talks about the almighty God. lets check for the meaning of
secular.
•The heart is a foam that absorb very fast. please watch the kind of
song you feed your heart with, your heart will lead you to praticalize
what you're HEARING.
•Songs with good lyrics that benefit humanity positively should not be
condemned except d vulgar ones. However one requirement given by Jesus
is for Christians is telling others about Him and music is a good
medium for a Christian.I strongly believe directing song to humanity
such as love, not giving up, workin hard, courage etc for
encouragement and that of God to get People closer to him (because
that is the origin of existence) is beautiful and good.
